When God rested on the seventh day and made it holy, when God brought an oppressed people out of bondage and commanded that they routinely “take a minute,” when Jesus redefined the sabbath as a healing event, the purpose of sabbath was made clear. It is a time God made just so we could thrive, and rejoice in the gift of it all. Jesus signaled that human-made sabbath prohibitions are superseded by divine intention for sabbath keeping, namely rest and restoration for all things.
